Housing Choice Vouchers
Federal rental assistance for very low-income families
The Housing Choice Voucher (HCV) program is the federal government's primary program for assisting very low-income families, the elderly, and persons with disabilities to afford decent, safe, and sanitary housing in the private market.
Application process
Check eligibility
Applicants must meet income and other eligibility requirements. Income limits are based on the Area Median Income (AMI) for the Austin-Round Rock metro area.
Apply when waitlist opens
The HCV waitlist is not always open. When it opens, applicants must complete and submit the application within the specified time period.
Waitlist placement
Eligible applicants are placed on the waitlist. HATC uses a lottery system or date-and-time-based selection to determine placement.
Eligibility review
When your name is reached on the waitlist, you will be contacted for an eligibility review. You must provide all required documentation.
Voucher issuance
Once determined eligible, you will be issued a Housing Choice Voucher and attend a briefing session to learn about the program.
Find housing
You have a limited time to find suitable housing. The unit must pass an inspection and the landlord must agree to participate in the program.
Eligibility review
Eligibility for the HCV program is based on several factors including total annual gross income, family size, U.S. citizenship or eligible immigration status, and local preferences. HATC uses HUD-established income limits to determine eligibility. In general, the family's income may not exceed 50% of the Area Median Income (AMI).
